Reasons Behind the Investigation
Joell-Deshields faces complaints of bullying and misusing donated funds, according to BBC. Employees say he created a hostile work environment, singling out staff and volunteers and sending threatening or intimidating messages. The organization is also reviewing reports that vouchers from a corporate sponsor, intended to support Pride events, were allegedly used to buy personal luxury items, including perfumes, Apple speakers, and headphones.
Volunteers described a toxic culture, with some saying the CEO fostered intimidation from the top. One disabled volunteer said they received inappropriate messages through WhatsApp. People familiar with the situation added that a separate legal dispute involves claims that organizational policies discriminated against disabled volunteers.
After the allegations surfaced, the newly formed board of London LGBT Community Pride suspended Joell-Deshields. He asserted that he remains in his role, questioning the board’s authority, and denying wrongdoing, The Guardian reported.
Pride in London Responds
The investigation has prompted the leadership to act swiftly. The board said it is aware of multiple allegations and has launched a formal review. Leaders added that they cannot comment further while the investigation continues, but emphasized their commitment to a safe, inclusive, and legally compliant organization.
Volunteers expressed concern that the allegations could damage the charity’s reputation and make it harder to secure funding. Some said they initially hesitated to speak out due to the fragile state of pride organizations in the UK. Others described growing frustration over the current culture, which appeared to originate from the top.
