Longtime fans of Kerry Washington are likely familiar with what some consider to be her breakthrough role — as Chenille in “Save the Last Dance.” Since then, Washington has become an Emmy-winning actress with a slate of notable projects under her belt. She is a versatile and influential figure in Hollywood. She also deserves props for her advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community. Here are some of her most notable roles.
1. “The Six Triple Eight”
Washington took on the role of Maj. Charity Adams in Tyler Perry’s “The Six Triple Eight.” The film spotlights the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female unit deployed overseas during World War II. Washington’s portrayal of Adams, the first Black woman to command a battalion in the U.S. Army, brings to life both the challenges and triumphs of the unit. The battalion was tasked with clearing a three-year backlog of undelivered mail to boost soldier morale. Despite confronting racism, sexism, and grueling conditions, they completed their mission in 90 days.
2. “The Last King of Scotland”
Washington delivers a show-stopping performance as Kay Amin, the wife of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland.” The film was well-received, with Whitaker winning the Best Actor Oscar for his role. Meanwhile, Washington’s portrayal earned her a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture at the 38th NAACP Image Awards. At the box office, the movie earned approximately $17.6 million in the U.S., according to Box Office Mojo.
3. “Little Fires Everywhere”
In the Hulu miniseries “Little Fires Everywhere,” Washington stars alongside Reese Witherspoon. She plays Mia Warren, a single mother and artist who becomes entwined with the picture-perfect Richardson family. The series explores themes of race, class, and motherhood in 1990s suburban America. Washington’s performance earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series.
4. “UnPrisoned”
Washington recently starred as the lead in the Hulu comedy series UnPrisoned. She played Paige Alexander, a therapist who navigates life after her father, played by Delroy Lindo, is released from prison. The show blends humor with serious conversations about family dynamics, allowing Washington to show off her comedic and dramatic talents.
5. “Django Unchained”
In Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, the actress plays Broomhilda von Shaft, the wife of Jamie Foxx’s titular character. Set in the antebellum South, the film follows Django’s quest to free Broomhilda from slavery. Washington’s performance adds emotional depth to the action-packed Western.
6. “Ray”
Washington portrayed Della Bea Robinson in “Ray,” a biopic about legendary singer Ray Charles, played by Jamie Foxx. Her performance provides a nuanced look at the challenges and triumphs of being married to a musical genius. Washington’s portrayal earned her an NAACP Image Award and a Golden Globe nomination.
7. “Scandal”
One of Washington’s most iconic roles was Olivia Pope in “Scandal.” In the ABC political drama, she plays a high-powered crisis manager with a talent for fixing others’ problems while her own life remains tumultuous. Her portrayal of Pope, who struggles between personal desires and professional duties, earned her multiple award nominations.

Washington is undeniably a star. She has established herself as one of Hollywood’s leading entertainers. Plus, her signature scowl and powerful performances are as iconic as she is.
Beyond her on-screen achievements, Washington has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights. In 2015, she was honored with the Vanguard Award at the GLAAD Media Awards for her significant contributions to promoting equality.
