Straight Outta Compton is tracking much larger, with current estimates placing the N.W.A. biopic at a massive $55.1 million opening box office weekend. The film could even cross $60 million.
Straight Outta Compton grossed $4.96 million in previews on Thursday night and pulled in an impressive $24.2 million on Friday, making it the fifth highest opening day for an August release ever.
Rentrak’s senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian released the following statement about Straight Outta Compton‘s success:
“‘Straight Outta Compton’ has become a total cross-over kind of movie that’s captured the zeitgeist with a real groundswell of people wanting to see it. There’s been growing anticipation for it all summer. Now that it’s out, the story is really resonating among moviegoers.”
Straight Outta Compton cost $29 million to make.
