New York Fashion Week – 2 Day Recap

New York Fashion Week is going into the third day and the momentum and collections have been outstanding thus far. The designs are full of personality, unique cuts, and well mixed fabrics and patterns! The designers have definitely not disappointed with their Spring 2013 collections.
The first day kicked off with shows from BCBGMaxazria, Nicholas K, Monika Chiang, Kaelen and many more. On Friday, the excitement continued with top designers Rebecca Minkoff, CZAR by Cesar Galindo, Nicole Miller and others. One of the big questions every season is what  the color of the season will be, and it did not take long to see that vibrant oranges are a designer favorite.

Here are a few pieces from each of the aforementioned designers’ Spr’ 2013 collections with a brief overview about what inspired each designer during the creative process.

BCBGMaxazria continued to do what they are known for; which  is bringing a classic feminine collection but incorporating a unique characteristic into the collection. This collection was “Femme-Fatale” inspired which was represented by the leather harness detailing within the pieces of the collection.

Nicholas K’s “Soylent Green” inspired Collection was inspired by the movie of the same name. The pieces purposely reflected the style of a futuristic nomad and were simplisticly organic. Neutral colored, comfortable, and versatile pieces that can easily be mixed and matched. I love the way the oversized frames were incorporated also.

Monika Chiang said that her collection was inspired by the street styles of Africa. She definitely Served the Street Chic look very well with her inclusion of biker jackets over causal but feminine dresses, pleated skirts with button down tops, and parachute pants with baseball hats. The collection was modern and trendy.

Kaelen was inspired by Jean-Paul Goude’s book featuring pics of the iconic Grace Jones. This collection is 80’s rock girl funk. With all of those adjectives, Kaelen still managed to execute the pieces simply and stylishly. There was Peplum, Neoprene, and the most mesmerizing Black and White print I have seen; and that white suit is a breath of fresh air.

Rebecca Minkoff’s collection had an “All American-Weekend Girl” feel, but the collection was inspired by well-known photographer Slim Aarons who is noted for capturing the lives of the glamorous jet-setters of the 70’s. The pieces were flirty yet polished with playful prints and details.

Czar by Cesar Galindo was inspired by “garden party” looks. The collection was chic, sophisticated, and contemporary feminine. There was a lot of color and flare. The pieces were seasonaly interchangeable and could easily go from day to night.

Nicole Miller said that she was inspired by “nature, sci-fi, and futurism” for this collection. The collection is definitely an expert mixture of different textures and prints. It is juxtaposition at its best.

There are so many other great designers presenting collections via the NYFW stage, box, theatre, and studio. See more here.
