Starting next season, The New Orleans Hornets will become The New Orleans Pelicans. You heard right… Pelicans. Why? Symbolically it makes sense for the state of Louisiana.
They identify with the Pelican because it is the state bird, and it symbolizes the city’s return from the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina. It’s also supposed to remind fans of the coastal restoration and wildlife conservation.
While the pelican is an odd bird for a sports team, here’s to hoping next season turns out well for them!
