Activist and North Carolina educator Bree Newsome decided to take the Confederate flag debate into her own hands this morning.

Bree grabbed her climbing gear and proceeded to shimmy her way up a 30-foot flagpole to take down the Confederate flag from South Carolina Statehouse grounds.

As cops arrived and asked her to descend, she responded with scripture, including verses from Psalms: “The Lord is my light, and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life– of whom shall I be afraid?”

She eventually came down, and the flag went back up. She, as well as activist James Tyson, were both arrested on charges related to their stunt.

According to a statement from the activists, they took down the flag for the following reason:

“We could not sit by and watch the victims of the Charleston Massacre be laid to rest while the inspiration for their deaths continue to fly above their caskets.”
