Another win for diversity!
Fans will no doubt recognize Sophie Okonedo from her Oscar-nominated role in Hotel Rwanda, but now the actress will portray Elizabeth Proctor in the Broadway revival of The Crucible.
Sophie will become the first black woman in Broadway history to play the character.
For those of you unfamiliar with The Crucible, Elizabeth was a central figure during the Salem Witch Trials, having herself been accused of witchcraft. Although she escaped execution, her husband John Proctor wasn’t so lucky. He was convicted of witchcraft and hanged in 1692.
While a theater has yet to be locked in, The Crucible will open on April 7, 2016, for a 20-week limited engagement.
Sophie won the 2014 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role in A Raisin in the Sun.
Congratulations, Sophie!
