The greatest sibling rivalry in sports history.
Serena Williams inched a step closer to winning her seventh US Open and 22nd overall Grand Slam singles title by defeating her sister Venus (6-2, 1-6, 6-3) for the second time at a Grand Slam tournament this summer. Unlike at Wimbledon, however, she needed three sets to complete the task.
Serena’s victory tonight places her just two wins away from her first calendar Grand Slam (winning all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year) and fourth consecutive US Open title.
Of their 27 career matches played, Serena now leads Venus 16-11, having won the last seven of their eight meetings since 2009. Venus’ last win against Serena came during the semifinals at the Rogers Cup in Montreal last summer.
Serena will next face 32-year-old Roberta Vinci of Italy in the semifinals on Thursday.
Congratulations, Serena, and well played, Venus! What an extremely high quality match!
