Serena and Venus Williams to Meet in 2017 Australian Open Final—Their First Grand Slam Final Meeting Since 2009

The last time Serena and Venus Williams met in a Grand Slam final was 2009.

The sisters, then in their late twenties, played in the 2009 Wimbledon final—a match Serena would go on to win 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

Now Serena and Venus will face off for the 2017 Australian Open title this weekend—their ninth Grand Slam final and 28th encounter on the tennis court. Serena leads 16-11 in their on-court meetings.

The first and last time Serena and Venus played in the Australian Open final was 2003, with Serena coming out on top 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-4.

Venus dispatched fellow American CoCo Vandeweghe 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-3 to secure a spot in the 2017 Australian Open final, while Serena took out Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia 6-2, 6-1.

Venus, 36, hopes to win an eighth Grand Slam title, while Serena, 35, is going for a record-breaking 23rd title.

Congratulations, Serena and Venus!
