Cupcake the cat miraculously survived an 8-day journey without food or water as she was accidentally shipped cross-country in a box.
Her Falmouth-based owner, Julie, didn’t see when Cupcake jumped in a box of DVDs that she was packing to send to a customer. Eight days later the cat popped out of the box when it was opened 260-miles away in Worthing, West Sussex.
Needless to say, Cupcake’s presence ‘startled’ the recipient who immediately called the vet who came to rescue the severely dehydrated feline.
Dr Ben Colwell, a vet at Grove Lodge who treated Cupcake, said: “She was quite dehydrated and obviously really quite scared, quite nervous.
“She’s done really, really well, she’s responded to fluids really well. Luckily she was microchipped.”
They were able to track down Cupcake’s owner who had been frantically putting up posters around her neighborhood for days.
“When I realized she was missing, two weeks ago, it was the most horrible, scary feeling,” she told BBC South Today. “We looked everywhere for her.
“I feel terrible about what’s happened, you know. I mean, I put everything in the box and I sealed it straight away, so I don’t know how she managed to get in there.
“It was a miracle she was alive, she’s managed to survive that awful ordeal.”
Cupcake has made a full recovery.
