Would you consider Mackelmore’s “Thrift Shop” to be the biggest rap song in Billboard history?

Billboard counted down its top 100 rap songs ever to honor the 25th anniversary of the Hot Rap Songs chart and Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” took the top spot.

We’re sure you’re probably have a lot of questions — as did we, but Billboard says the ranking is based on actual performance on the Hot Rap Songs chart.

The 25th Anniversary Hot Rap Songs ranking is based on actual performance on the weekly Hot Rap Songs chart, since the chart’s inception in the March 11, 1989, issue. Rankings are based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 having the greatest value and weeks at lower positions proportionately less. Due to various changes in chart rules, chart length and methodology throughout the years, songs had varying reigns at No. 1 and on the chart. To ensure equitable representation of the biggest hits from all 25 years, certain time frames were weighted to account for the difference in turnover rates from those periods.

It’s hard to argue with sheer numbers, but something about this just doesn’t seem fair — especially after seeing some of our favorite & most influential rap songs of the last 25 years in other places on the list.

Times sure have changed, that’s for sure!
