Lupita Nyong’o may be an Oscar-winning actress, but according to reports her latest performance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens just wasn’t up to par.
According to reports, her role as alien Maz Kanata has been ‘massively cut’ in the final edit of the film.
Maker Disney used advanced motion-capture technology to transform her into alien Maz Kanata for the biggest movie event of the year.
However, JJ must have been pretty unconvinced by her performance, as he ordered a lot of her dialogue to be re-recorded.
A Star Wars insider revealed: “The CGI seemed to be what Lupita struggled with, perhaps because it meant she felt less of a connection to the character.
“There was a general sense that something wasn’t working so a lot of her scenes ended up being either re-worked or cut. Unfortunately she just didn’t end up delivering.
“It does happen in Hollywood, but not usually with Academy Award winners.
“Her part in the final film will now be a lot smaller than was initially expected.
“It’s ultimately quite embarrassing for Lupita but she’s still thrilled to even be in such an iconic movie.”
Fans have been wondering why so little has been released about Lupita’s character, who JJ recently teased is a former space pirate. Interestingly, the director also confirmed that Maz’s back story would feature in the film, which comes out on December 17.
According to a source, this wasn’t always the plan — and this is another example of a revision that was made after the actress shot her scenes.
Whether Lupita’s character has 10 lines or 1000, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is on track to become one of the highest-grossing films of all time.
