Katy Perry Admits She ‘Did More’ than Kiss a Girl & Says She Tried to ‘Pray the Gay Away’ at Jesus Camps

Katy Perry burst onto the pop scene with her provocative single “I Kissed a Girl” back in 2008, but the singer revealed that she ‘did more than that’ while accepting an award at the Human Rights Campaign Gala Dinner in Los Angeles Saturday night.

Though the “Chained to the Rhythm” singer, who recently split from Orlando Bloom, has become more outspoken about sexuality, there was a time the “California Gurl” was a devout Catholic who says she spent her summers at “Jesus camps” trying to “pray the gay away.”

“Truth be told, I did more than that,” the 32-year-old singer said in reference to her first hit. “But how was I going to reconcile that with the gospel-singing girl raised in youth groups that were pro-conversion camps? What I did know was I was curious, and even then I knew sexuality was not as black and white as this dress. But in 2008, when that song came out, I knew that I started a conversation, and a lot of the world seemed curious enough to sing along, too.”Perry, whose dress comment was referencing her ruffled attire for the night, went on to praise the people she encountered upon entering the music industry for allowing her to expand outside “her bubble” and inspired her new, open-minded outlook on sexuality.

Perry was on hand to accept the National Equality Award for her work in the LGBTQ community, which she gushed over in a pair of tweets following Saturday’s ceremony.

“I will never cease to be a champion, an ally, a spotlight and a loving voice for all LGBTQ-identifying people,” she wrote. “I feel sparkly as f—! Truth be told, I think a lot of that has to do with the magic that has rubbed off on me, from all of you.”

Everyone has his/her own truth. Thank you Katy for sharing your story.
