HBO has released the first trailer for its upcoming Bessie Smith biopic Bessie.

Starring Queen Latifah, Michael Kenneth Williams, Mo’Nique, Mike Epps and more, Bessie will chronicle the blues star’s triumphs, her alleged affair with Ma Rainey and her bout with alcoholism.

Bessie premieres on HBO on May 16.
