Billionaire entertainment mogul David Geffen, 82, has filed for divorce from his husband of less than two years, David Armstrong. Geffen and Armstrong’s relationship was as low-key as it was unexpectedly glamorous. The two reportedly met in 2020 when Armstrong was working as Geffen’s personal trainer, according to the New York Post.
Despite the massive difference in their ages, the connection quickly grew. In December 2021, the famously private Geffen gave the world a rare glimpse of his new romance, posting a festive Instagram photo of the duo relaxing on his $400 million megayacht. He captioned the photo, “Merry Christmas indeed!” That now-deleted post was a hint that the media mogul had found love, and he wasn’t shy about enjoying it in style, per People magazine.
However, their relationship has come to an end — leaving many to wonder what led to the downfall of Geffen and Armstrong’s marriage.
Details about Geffen’s divorce from Armstrong are scarce.

Geffen cited “irreconcilable differences” in his May 16 filing in Los Angeles, officially marking the end of a whirlwind marriage that bridged a 50-year age gap.
Court documents obtained by People magazine also reveal that the couple’s date of separation was February 22, indicating that the marriage was effectively over for a few months before the news went public. Geffen has enlisted famed celebrity divorce attorney Laura Wasser to represent him in the proceedings. Wasser, known as the “disso queen” in Hollywood for handling high-profile breakups, is likely to ensure the split is resolved efficiently.
As of writing, neither Geffen nor Armstrong has publicly commented on the divorce.
Geffen’s fortune could be on the line following his divorce.

Geffen’s empire could become a state of contention since there was no prenuptial agreement to protect Geffen’s estimated $8.7 billion fortune. The 82-year-old mogul’s decision to wed the 32-year-old former dancer with no legal safety net immediately sparked chatter.
Fortunately for Geffen, the financial fallout might not be as dire as that missing prenup suggests. California divorce law offers a bit of relief to the ultra-wealthy in Geffen’s situation. Because Geffen has been retired for years and derives most of his income from stocks and other investments, those assets are considered separate property and are largely off-limits in the divorce, per TMZ.
That doesn’t mean Armstrong will leave empty-handed. Under California law, the 32-year-old is entitled to spousal support for half the length of the marriage. Given the brief duration of their union, that amounts to roughly one year of support payments. The divorce filing confirms that Geffen has agreed to pay support for about a year. He will also cover Armstrong’s attorney fees. The exact dollar amount isn’t listed in public filings. However, for a man of Geffen’s means, it’s likely substantial enough to keep his ex comfortable.
Do you think David Geffen made a mistake marrying without a prenup? Or was it a sign of trust?
