‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Rakes in Takes the No. 1 Spot at the Box Office with $34 Million Debut

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ came through and took the top spot at the box office this weekend with an opening stretch of $34 million.

This put the romantic comedy ahead of Mark Wahlberg’s ‘Mile 22.’

Crazy Rich Asians is the first Hollywood–produced film to have an entire Asian-American cast in lead roles since The Joy Luck Club arrived in theaters 25 years ago. It’s also the highest-earning opening for any rom-com in the past three years. The previous record-holder goes to Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck, which opened to $30.1 million. Crazy Rich Asians is also the top comedy opening of the year so far as it beat out Game Night ($17 million), Blockers ($20.5 million), and The Spy Who Dumped Me($12 million).

Crazy Rich Asians, which is based on a book of the same name, follows Rachel Chu (Fresh Off the Boat’s Constance Wu) as she travels with her boyfriend to Singapore and realizes that his family is well…crazy rich. Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Gemma Chan and Jimmy O. Yang also star in the film. And they’ve all been celebrating the film’s release with messages on social media. Wu shared a photo showing the film got “certified fresh” from Rotten Tomatoes and a touching message about why this film is so important. Awkwafina shared a similar, personal message as well.

Did you make it to see ‘Crazy Rich Asians’? We’ve heard nothing but great things about it.
