At today’s (Jan. 20) inauguration ceremony, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris was escorted up the U.S. Capitol stairs by Eugene Goodman — the Capitol Police officer who diverted a mob of pro-Trump rioters away from the Senate floor during the Jan. 6 insurrection. According to CBS News, after the heroic act, Goodman was promoted to the new Deputy House Sergeant at Arms.

As reported by REVOLT, Goodman’s efforts have been praised by many after he intentionally led a group of rioters away from the Senate chambers and prevented more bloodshed during the deadly insurrection. Earlier this month, several lawmakers called for Goodman to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his bravery.

“The actions of Officer Goodman were heroic and represent the best of law enforcement,” Rep. Nancy Mace said. “When he was the only thing standing between Members of Congress and the violent mob, he quickly and selflessly redirected their fury upon himself so those Members could escape. Thanks to his valor, we are here today. From the bottom of my heart, I cannot thank him enough for his bravery and for his dedication to the call of duty.”

“If not for the quick, decisive and heroic actions from Officer Goodman, the tragedy of last week’s insurrection could have multiplied in magnitude to levels never before seen in American history,” Rep. Emanuel Cleaver added. “With this prestigious award, we can show our gratitude to Officer Goodman for saving countless lives and defending our democracy.”

Harris and President-elect Joe Biden will be sworn in today around noon EST. Harris — who will be the first-ever Black, woman and South Asian vice president — will be sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who became the first Latina Supreme Court justice under Barack Obama’s administration. Harris will also be joined by the Showtime Marching Band from Howard University, her alma mater.

Glad to see Officer Goodman receive the respect and admiration he deserved.
