Brandy Says Monica Turned Down ‘Verzuz’ Battle: ‘She Doesn’t Wanna Do It’ [Video]

Those of you hoping for a Brandy vs. Monica ‘Verzuz’ battle, your hopes have officially been dashed…for now.

According to Brandy, they were both approached but Monica turned the idea down.

“I heard that she doesn’t wanna do it,” Brandy said of Monica when asked by #V103Atlanta if she’s looking forward to a battle between them following the success of #JillScott and #ErykahBadu’s battle. “The last thing I heard is she pretty much turned it down, she didn’t want to be a part of that, but I understand.”

We’re not sure what Brandy heard, but just a few weeks ago Monica said she was down for the battle just as long as it was a ‘celebration’ of both artists’ music.

“I understand the idea of [Verzuz] and I think it’s really, really entertaining, and it is an incredible idea. What I do like is it’s kind of turning into a celebration. I can handle a celebration. … One thing that has happened to me my whole career is being put against someone else that I’m not even remotely similar to. I think the reality is, us being polar opposites makes it dope,” she said.

“The only battle or “Verzuz” they want to see with me is me against Brandy, and the reality is, people have put us against each other for twenty-something years,” she said.

Monica added that if the Instagram Live session was more about honoring their music, it would make more sense to her.

“The reality is, I think ‘Boy Is Mine’ is such a phenomenal record because we’re polar opposites. And I think that’s dope. And she’s one of the greatest artists of our time as well, so could we do a celebration or something of that sort? That would be the only thing that makes sense to me. Because I’ve been trying to tell people for about 25 years, you can like both! You’re going to turn this into 1998 all over again and I have no interest in that,” she said.

We ALL know that a Brandy vs. Monica battle — even if planned as a celebration — would end up shady as hell.
