Boxing star Manny Pacquiao apologized Tuesday for denouncing people in gay relationships as “worse than animals,” but did not back down from his stance against marriage.
Sidebar: Did you know he’s a Senate candidate in the Philippines?
His statement came when a TV network asked the candidates about their views on same-sex marriage.
“It’s just common sense,” Pacquiao said in the remarks posted online by the TV5 network. “Have you seen any animal having male-to-male or female-to-female relations?”
He continued by using animals as an example of recognizing gender differences, and said “if you have male-to-male or female-to-female [relationships], then people are worse than animals.”
Of course that comment didn’t sit right with fellow candidates, voters, or news reporters. After receiving criticism from across the world, he took to Facebook with the following apology:
I’m sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I’ve hurt. I still stand…
