A Whitney Houston documentary said to be made “in search of the forces that made and then destroyed the singer who has been described as having one of the greatest voices of the last 50 years,” is headed to BBC Two thanks to filmmaker Nick Broomfield.

“The Whitney Houston Estate has no involvement in that film whatsoever,” a family spokesperson tells Billboard over e-mail. Houston’s family was also not involved in Lifetime’s 2015 telefilm Whitney, directed by Angela Bassett.
Broomfield’s past on-screen endeavors include deep dives into the lives of sex workers, soldiers on the Iraqi frontline, and serial killers. His 1998 doc Kurt & Courtney made headlines for alleging that Courtney Love played a role in Kurt Cobain’s death (claims that she has refuted in the past) while 2014’s Biggie & Tupac suggested that Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight planned both of the rappers’ murders.
Houston passed away at 48 years old in February 2012. The pop queen’s death was caused by accidental drowning in her hotel room, per her autopsy, which also cited cocaine among other drugs in her system. No release date for Whitney has been announced.
A representative for Broomfield did not immediately respond to Billboard’s request for comment.
