Nina, the long-awaited and highly-criticized Nina Simone biopic, is finally set to be released next month.

Zoe Saldana recently opened up to Latina Magazine about her process in channelling Nina Simone for the role.

“As a woman, it wasn’t difficult to empathize with another woman. But I needed to be very isolated,” she told the magazine. “I moved out of my house for three months. I wasn’t really talking to anybody that I knew. I just needed to be all things Nina. It was so intense, and everything happened really fast.”

The actress also kept things candid about troubles behind-the-scenes, revealing why it’s taken so long to bring the movie to life.

“The people behind the project weren’t my cup of tea,” she said. “The director was fine, but there was a lot of mismanagement, which is why we’re still here three years later. And I’m still trying to fight with everybody to get the movie finished. Nina deserves better.”

We’ll wait to see the film to pass judgement, but to be honest — our expectations aren’t really that high.
