Uma Thurman looked much more like her usual self when she appeared on The Today Show this morning to promote her new series, The Slap.

Earlier this week, she made headlines after attending the show’s red carpet premiere with a very different look.

Some attributed the look to aging, while others guessed she may have had some work done.

As it turns out, it was neither. She just experimented with her makeup.

Uma’s makeup artist Troy Surratt explains what he did:

“We experimented with the makeup,” Surratt told Refinery29.com on Feb. 10. “We did a much stronger brow and a bold lip for a French sort of feel.”

Surratt credits his handy makeup tools (not surgery or Botox) for creating the 44-year-old star’s lifted appearance. “The way I shaded her eyebrows with the pencil, I created an uplifting effect,” Surratt explained.

“Then, I finished with a shimmering, silky-beige shadow on her lids, and went with no mascara at all.” He added, “Sort of a reaction against all the fake lashes we’ve been seeing on the red carpet.”

See what Uma had to say about the reactions to her ‘new look’ below.
