23-year-old Joaquin Mendez was shot and killed after asking his cousin a question about the bulletproof vest he was wearing.
According to witnesses, Joaquin wondered out loud whether the vest still worked. His cousin Alexandro Garibaldi, overheard and said “let’s see” — right before he pulled out a gun and shot him.
Officers found Joaquin outside the house with a gunshot wound in his chest. He later died at a hospital.

According to the report, Alexandro initially told officers he found his wounded cousin after hearing a gunshot. Police say the vest was found inside the house with a gunshot.
Alexandro was arrested and charged with manslaughter.
