A spokesperson for Winfrey confirmed Lee had been laid to rest in a private funeral over Thanksgiving weekend, per People.

At 18, Lee gave birth to Winfrey in Mississippi. She and Winfrey’s father, Vernon, never married.

Winfrey was raised by her grandmother, Hattie Mae Lee, before joining her half-siblings, Patricia and Jeffrey, and mother in Milwaukee, where Lee worked as a housekeeper. Winfrey later relocated to Tennessee at the age of 14 to live with her father.

Lee is survived by Winfrey and another daughter, Patricia. Lee placed Patricia up for adoption at birth, but the two later reunited.

May Vernita be at peace.
