We all know that Michael Sam isn’t the only gay NFL athlete, but did the ‘closeted’ players support Michael Sam during his ‘coming out’ journey? According to Sam, they sure did.
Michael sat down with Oprah Winfrey for his first interview since getting cut by the St. Louis Rams for an in-depth conversation. During that conversation, he talked about the support he received from other gay players in the league.
He said:
Very few reached out to me and pretty much just told me their gratitude and how thankful they were that I had the courage [to come out publicly]. They wished that they had the courage to come out.
Oprah asked for clarification as to exactly how many men reached out. Michael responded:
Men. There’s a lot of us out there. I’m not the only one. I’m just the only one who’s open.
