Kim Kardashian took to her website to share her excitement over eating her placenta on Monday.

As you know, Kim gave birth to baby Saint West last week and has now turned her placenta into pills.

“So, I’m really not this holistic person or someone who would have ever considered eating my placenta. I actually thought Kourtney would have soooo done this, but I don’t think she did,” Kim wrote.”And when I say ‘eat my placenta,’ I mean that I’m having it freeze-dried and made into a pill form—not actually fry it like a steak and eat it (which some people do, BTW).”

This isn’t the first time she’s consumed her own placenta. Kim did the same thing after giving birth to North West in order to help prevent any postpartum depression.

“I heard so many stories when I was pregnant with North of moms who never ate their placenta with their first baby and then had postpartum depression,” she explained. “But then when they took the pills with their second baby, they did not suffer from depression! So I thought, why not try it? What do I have to lose?

“I really didn’t want the baby blues and thought I can’t go wrong with taking a pill made of my own hormones—made by me, for me. I started researching and read about so many moms who felt this same way and said the overall healing process was so much easier.”

Kim was able to get the placenta pills with the help of doula Joni Lucarelli. Lucarelli has been encapsulating placentas for six years and is used to working with celebrity clients. She estimates she’s encapsulated 500 placentas.

“The studies are inconclusive but anecdotally, what we’re seeing is that women who are bringing their placenta back into their bodies this way are reporting that their milk supplies are better for the baby, their energy is higher, they don’t seem to be struggling with postpartum depression to the extent that women [who] are not doing this may be,” Lucarelli explained.

The entire process, including being on call for questions and concerns, costs $275.

After a client gives birth, Lucarelli picks up the placenta from the hospital and prepares it at her home using either the Traditional Chinese Method (gently steaming the placenta with lemon, ginger and hot pepper before dehydrating) or the Raw Foods Method(processed raw and dehydrated at a temperature not to exceed 118 degrees, which Kardashian chose).

It’s then returned to the mom, usually within a day’s time.

The number of capsules is proportional to the size of the placenta and clients usually receive between 100 and 200 capsules. Most clients are directed to take one capsule three times a day until they are finished, but Lucarelli says sometimes new moms will take them more slowly.

“Some moms, when they start to feel like they are landing on their feet OK, [will] stop taking the capsules and save them for hormonally challenging periods in the future,” Lucarelli says. “By putting them in a Ziploc and throwing them in the freezer — [for] days of PMS or menopause if they want to drag along for that many years.”
