“Consider Getting Married” — Hillary Clinton Offers Warning to Those Seeking Same-Sex Marriage

Despite what popular late 2010s memes would have you believe, Hillary Rodham Clinton certainly didn’t disappear after the 2016 Presidential Election. Shortly after winning the popular vote but losing the electoral college, the former Senator took even more political action than during her campaign. In May 2017, she founded Onward Together, an organization that raises funds for various progressive political groups.

She continues to fight the good fight to ensure that marginalized communities and civil rights remain protected. To that end, she offered a stern warning to the LGBTQIA+ community about the current state of same-sex marriage. Her comments are certainly cause for concern, but more than anything, she encourages people to take action.

What were Hillary Clinton’s comments about same-sex marriage?

On Aug. 15, 2025, Hillary Clinton appeared as a guest on the Raging Moderates podcast. She sat down with host Jessica Tarlov and spoke about many of today’s issues, including President Donald Trump’s dictatorial influence and how it will impact the rights of individual states.

Among these concerns, Clinton spoke on how hard the Supreme Court would fight to undo the legalization of same-sex marriage.

“My prediction is they will do to gay marriage what they did to [the right to an] abortion,” she warned. “They will send it back to the states. Anyone in a committed relationship out there in the [LGBTQIA+] community, you ought to consider getting married.”

She saw the same chain of events occur with the Roe v. Wade decision, in which Republicans worked for “50 years” to overturn the national right to an abortion. She fears that the same would soon occur with Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court case that legalized same-sex marriage throughout the country back in 2015.

If the Supreme Court overturns marriage equality, the state response would be swift and ruthless. MSNBC reports that over 32 states have “trigger laws” in place to immediately revoke same-sex marriage rights if the Obergefell decision were reversed. While the fight to preserve those rights throughout the country rages on, Clinton advises people to prepare for the worst-case scenario.

“I don’t think they’ll undo existing marriages, but I fear that they’ll undo the national right,” she predicts.

Is Hillary Clinton an LGBTQIA+ ally?

Her support for the LGBTQIA+ community has been consistent for a while, but it’s had to evolve over the years. In the early 2000s, she did oppose same-sex marriage to a considerable degree. Though she supported civil unions and even voiced approval of a state’s decision to support gay marriage, she was once against amending the U.S. Constitution to reflect that.

Since then, her stance has changed considerably. During and after her presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton has tried to be a stronger ally for the community. In a 2016 interview with The Washington Blade, she declared her desire to fight for a “hopeful, inclusive America where everyone counts.”

“I want [LGBTQIA+] people in every corner of this country to know that as president, I will always have your back,” she told the outlet nearly a decade ago.
