While her views have somewhat evolved on the subject, Caitlyn Jenner had folks scratching their heads when she voiced her lukewarm views on same-sex marriage on the season premiere of The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday.
In case you missed it, Caitlyn said the following about same-sex marriage:
“I’m a traditionalist. I’m older than most people in the audience. I kind of like tradition, and it’s always been a man and a woman. I’m thinking, ‘I don’t quite get it.'”
She continued.
“As time has gone on, I think like a lot of people on this issue have really changed their thinking here to ‘I don’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness,’ you know? That’s not my job. Okay. If that word ‘marriage’ is really, really that important to you, I can go with it.”
Understandably, Ellen was puzzled by Caitlyn’s views and expressed her confusion in an interview with Howard Stern on Tuesday.
“She still has a judgement about gay marriage. I said, ‘You’re wanting people to understand and accept you; this is like… really confusing to people. And you still have a judgment about gay people and marriage.’ She goes, ‘Well, if the word marriage is that important.’ It is. That’s the word. We want the same thing.”
