Florida International football player Jonnu Smith’s 2016 season and college career have come to an end following a domestic dispute between him and his pregnant girlfriend.

Mary Gaspar, who is five months pregnant with Jonnu’s child, dumped a pot of boiling water on him while in his dorm room on Halloween, according to the Miami Herald.

via CBS:

Smith suffered severe burns to his head, neck, back, shoulder and arm. Gaspar was charged with aggravated battery and has since been released on a pre-trial release order.

Gaspar told police that she and Smith had been arguing throughout the day about the attention that Smith was paying to her and their relationship. She said she was “feeling extremely emotional and stressed” when she decided to boil a pot of water in Smith’s dorm room and then pour it onto Smith.

Gaspar also told police that when Smith’s reaction to having boiling water poured onto him wasn’t strong enough, she began hitting him with open hands.

While the overall extent of the damage done to Smith by the burns isn’t known, he will not play a game for the Panthers again this season. He could continue his career on the next level, however, as he’s projected to be a late round draft pick or coveted undrafted free agent.

Yikes.
