Earlier this week Raven-Symoné raised eyebrows and ruffled feathers when her ‘Where Are They Now?’ interview aired on OWN. In the interview, she told Oprah that she doesn’t want to be labeled as ‘gay’ or ‘African-American’.

“I don’t want to be labeled as gay. I want to be labeled as a human who loves humans. I’m tired of being labeled. I’m an American. I’m not an African-American, I’m an American,” said Raven.

After a few days of negative backlash and being harassed on social media Raven sent an official statement to TheGrio.com.

She writes:

“I never said I wasn’t black… I want to make that very clear. I said, I am not African-American. I never expected my personal beliefs and comments to spark such emotion in people. I think it is only positive when we can openly discuss race and being labeled in America.”

And there you have it.
