Angela Bassett not only leads Wakanda, she does it while looking just like she did in What’s Love Got to Do With It all the way back in 1993. And while the star is definitely known for her talent on screen, her seemingly ageless skin has earned its own notoriety. If anyone proves that age is just a number, it’s Bassett.
Though you might assume Bassett is just blessed in the genes department (and she is), the star insists that it takes work. Luckily, she’s shared some tips that you can use even if you don’t rule a Marvel-worthy world.
She uses skincare specifically made for deeper skin tones.
Bassett revealed that in the past, she has struggled with hyperpigmentation, a common condition where there is an excess of melanin in the skin that causes dark patches to form. When she noticed that there weren’t a lot of skincare options formulated for her skin type, Bassett paired up with a specialist and created her own—the Dr. Barbara Strum Darker Skin Tones line. “Skin is skin, but African American skin has particular attributes,” Bassett told the Los Angeles Times. “It has a lot going for it, but we can also get hyperpigmentation in the sun. So we are trying to deal with various color differentials in our skin. And the keloid scarring, if you’re prone to that, can cause any little scratch to become something. So we address those sensitivities.”
She credits coconut oil as a skincare staple.
Even though she helped create a whole line of skincare, Bassett still swears by a pantry staple: Coconut oil. As Women’s Health previously reported, coconut oil is known for having many beauty benefits including its use as an eye makeup remover and body balm. “I always put on coconut oil—skin is the biggest organ!” Bassett told the Times.
Her workout and wellness routine keeps her skin glowing.
WH has shared how working out can purge your pores, brighten your complexion, and even prevent wrinkles and that could be the actress’ secret. Bassett definitely is not afraid of sweating it out. She’s shared with Prevention that she’s been doing TRX training with Rob Thompson of Get Fit By Rob for some time.
“I do a lot of cardio as well as strength building, and squeeze in meditation when I can,” Bassett also told Prevention. “When possible, I love to work out with my friends when I’m not on the road or filming.”
She follows a diet that also benefits her skin.
In a viral 2018 video from her Mission Impossible Fallout press tour, Bassett revealed exactly what she eats. “Monday, Tuesday, I may eat carbs, fruit; Tuesday, Wednesday, protein, veggies—veggies every day—no fats those four days, and then the last three days, I flood it with fat,” she said. “Good fat, though: maybe coconut oil, salmon, almonds, almond butter, you know, olive oil, that sort of thing.” All of these foods just so happen to be on WH’s list of the best foods for your skin.
Above all, she believes beauty is a state of mind.
Although she looks incredible, Bassett understands that real beauty comes from within. Speaking to the LA Times, Bassett defined beauty saying, “Real joy and peace from the inside. I think that’s what’s meant by aging gracefully. The wonder of life. The goodness of others. People who have a level head, a ready smile and are open to expression and creativity, things that are positive. I think that’s where it starts.”
