What do you do when you suffer from chronic back pain? Most people go for the Advil, but one man decided to try something a bit more extreme — semen injections.

As a result, he suffered a bacterial skin infection and had to be hospitalized.

According to a report published in the Irish Medical Journal, doctors came across a man who attempted to alleviate his pain by filling a syringe with his own man juice and then injecting it into his right arm. The man eventually sought medical treatment for the back injury, which was reportedly brought on by heavy lifting; however, during his medical examination, doctors noticed his right arm appeared to be infected. The patient informed the physicians he had tried to cure his ailment by injecting himself with his own sperm. And it wasn’t just a one-day, or week-long experiment. The dude had given himself one monthly dose for 18 consecutive months.

After further examination, the man was diagnosed with a bacterial skin infection called cellulitis and was given intravenous antimicrobial drugs. Though his back pain decreased during the hospitalization, he reportedly declined to have the fluid drained from his arm and discharged himself before completing treatment.

“The dangers of [injections] when carried out by the untrained layperson are highlighted as well as the vascular and soft tissue hazards surrounding the attempted injection of substances not intended for intravenous use,” Dr. Lisa Dunne wrote in the report. ‘The case also demonstrates the risks involved with medical experimentation prior to extensive clinical research.”

We hope after he was discharged from the ER they sent him straight over to the psych ward for an evaluation.
