Meryl Streep Claps Back at Rose McGowan’s Criticism: ‘I Didn’t Know About Weinstein’

Meryl Streep is not about to let Rose McGowan tarnish her good name.

The actress clapped back at Rose through a statement via her publicist.

“I wasn’t deliberately silent. I didn’t know. I don’t tacitly approve of rape. I didn’t know. I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening,” Merly said in a lengthy statement to HuffPost.

If you missed it, Rose called Meryl a hypocrite over the weekend and implied that she had willingly worked with Harvey Weinstein despite knowing about his predatory behavior.

“Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @goldenglobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real chance. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa,” the actress wrote in a since-deleted tweet, referring to the fashion label run by Weinstein’s estranged wife Georgina Chapman.

Meryl’s statement continued:

“Rose assumed and broadcast something untrue about me, and I wanted to let her know the truth. I am truly sorry she sees me as an adversary, because we are both, together will all the women in our business, standing in defiance of the same implacable foe.”
