Michael Sam is blaming his failure in the NFL on his decision to come out as gay.

In a recent interview with radio personality Dan Patrick, the 25-year-old also sheds light on why he chose to come out in the first place and reveals his post-football plans (he’s currently working towards his master’s degree and hopes to eventually transition into broadcasting).

According to Michael, his sexual orientation was already widely known, and so to avoid from being outed by reporters, he decided to come out on his own terms.

“I wanted to be the one to tell my own story. I didn’t want someone telling it for me.”

In an interesting turn of events, he now attributes his lack of success in the NFL to that decision.

When asked if coming out negatively impacted his career, Michael provided the following answer:

“I’m not going to say … but it probably would have been better for me if I didn’t come out; I would be on a roster. But, as I said, I have no regrets whatsoever.”

Still, Michael is hopeful that he will eventually find success in the NFL and is currently training for the opportunity.
