Common & John Legend Win Golden Globe for Best Original Song

Congratulations are in order.

During last night’s Golden Globe Awards, Common and John Legend beat out Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Sia and Patti Smith to claim the trophy for Best Original Song for their collaborative effort Glory for the film Selma.

Their win marks the first Golden Globe for both Common and John Legend.

Following their win, Common gave a rousing acceptance speech, briefly touching on the recent shooting deaths of Michael Brown, Eric Garner and two NYPD officers.

“… I am the unarmed black kid who maybe needed a hand, but was instead given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers murdered in the line of duty. ‘Selma’ has awakened my humanity.”

During their acceptance speech, a drawn-out “Yeeessssss!” could be heard from the audience, thanks to Oprah who appears in the film
