On Monday afternoon’s broadcast of Jeopardy!, the contestant in third place decided to sacrifice his guess at the correct answer to send a loving message to host Alex Trebek.
His intentionally incorrect response caused his winnings to drop to $5, but it nearly moved Alex to tears.
“That’s very kind of you. Thank you,” Alex said in response to the gesture.
Earlier this year, Alex was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
Two months later, he reported that he was responding well to treatment, and that he finished up chemotherapy in time to resume his hosting duties for Jeopardy!
However, after follow-up immunotherapy proved ineffective, he went for another round of chemo treatments in September.
The contestant, Dhruv Gaur, explained his thought process on Twitter.
…for context, Alex had just shared with us that he was reentering treatment for pancreatic cancer. We were all hurting for him so badly. 2/n

I’m just very grateful I got the opportunity to say what I know everyone was thinking. Sending all the love. #weloveyoualex
