ESPN issued an apology on Wednesday for comments made on SportsCenter about St. Louis Rams defensive end and openly gay Michael Sam’s showering habits.

On Tuesday, Josina Anderson reported comments from a defensive player on the team noting that Sam “is waiting to take a shower, as not to make his teammates feel uncomfortable.

To even suggest that a man, a fellow athlete, would have to or want to shower separately because he’s gay is as stupid as it is offensive.

“ESPN regrets the manner in which we presented our report,” the network said in a statement. “Clearly yesterday we collectively failed to meet the standards we have set in reporting on LGBT-related topics in sports.”
