Say What Now? Two High School Students Suspended Over Racist ‘Cotton Picking’ Prom Proposal Sign

Two South Florida high school students have been suspended after a racially-charged sign they were holding in a prom proposal picture made its way to the Internet.

In the photo, three girls — two white and one black — a sign reading, “You may be picking cotton, but we’re picking you to go to prom with us.”

As anyone with common sense could imagine, the social media reaction did NOT go well.

WPLG reported two of the girls have been suspended from Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, FL, and that they’ve apologized for the photo.

One of the girls’ fathers told the station that the sign was directed at the Black teen, whose is heir to her grandmother’s cotton farm and was not planning to go to the prom.

He also called it an inside joke that was not meant to be seen by others. So much for that.
