Say What Now? 25-Year-Old Man Arrested for Posing as a High School Student for Nine Months Just So He Could Play Basketball

25-year-old Sidney Gilstrap-Portley was arrested for posing as a Hurricane Harvey victim to get into a high school so he could play basketball.

He first enrolled in Skyline High School in August claiming he was left homeless after Harvey hit Texas. Not only did he enroll in high school and pose as a 17-year-old, but he also changed his nam to Rashun Richardson.

He was reportedly dating a 14-year-old girl at the school, according to the Dallas Morning News. The mother didn’t approve the relationship because of the age difference.

School officials believe Gilstrap-Portley’s goal was only to play basketball.

“When we had the issue of the Hurricane Harvey in the Houston-area, he took advantage of that and portrayed himself as a victim of that event and enrolled himself in one of our schools,” Dallas Independent School District superintendent Michael Hinojosa told FOX4.

Hinojosa has since apologized to the students and parents. Gilstrap-Portley attended North Mesquite High School and graduated in 2011.

In April, a coach recognized Gilstrap-Portley at a basketball tournament and reported him to Hillcrest’s coach, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Gilstrap-Portley was arrested Friday and face charges of tampering with government records.
