While this year’s Academy Awards is the topic of much conversation for its lacking diversity, television continues to make strides towards more diverse representation on- and off-camera.
Fresh on the heels of her 44th birthday–which she celebrated yesterday–Essence Atkins has been cast as the female lead in Marlon Wayans’ NBC comedy pilot Marlon.
According to Deadline, “Marlon centers on Marlon (Wayans), an inappropriate, but loving father who is committed to successfully co-parenting with his polar opposite ex-wife Angie (Atkins). Angie is a type-A interior designer by trade and something of a control freak who did one reckless and spontaneous thing in her life: fell in love with Marlon.”
Congratulations, Essence! Here’s to hoping Marlon is picked up to series!
