Former CNN anchor Don Lemon has discovered Carrie Underwood’s controversial past, and he’s gagged by her previous antics. Since leaving his position at the legacy news organization, Lemon has not shied away from sharing his unfiltered opinions. He now produces digital news content, including his popular “Don Lemon Show” YouTube channel.
Now, he’s focusing his attention on Underwood, shading her for previously taking a jab at former President Barack Obama.
The move came after Underwood took the stage on “American Idol” over Easter weekend. The singing competition aired an Easter special that featured various Christian music performances, including one from Underwood. Following the country singer’s performance, Lemon took to Instagram to remind viewers that Underwood was once involved in a messy controversy.
Don Lemon suggested that Carrie Underwood was “MAGA.”
@donlemon Just a reminder… #carrieunderwood #maga
As Underwood was receiving praise for her performance on “American Idol,” Lemon reminded netizens of the singer’s past. Lemon shared a throwback clip from the 2013 Country Music Association Awards, where Underwood and Brad Paisley performed a parody song titled “Obamacare by Morning,” poking fun at the Affordable Care Act. Lemon’s video, featuring his own face superimposed over the performance, ends with him shaking his head in disapproval. “Just a reminder,” Lemon captioned the post.
Lemon’s comment section lit up with reactions, as users slammed Underwood for the bit. “Even their jokes lack seasoning,” one person wrote. Another commented, “She’s literally the reason why I don’t watch American Idol this season. Cause I think the cluck, not!”
Ratings for the singing show suggest that fans have lost interest. According to The U.S. Sun, “American Idol” ratings have dropped by nearly 2 million viewers from the season 23 premiere to the recent Easter Gospel special, which some crew members reportedly felt was “inappropriate.” The three-hour Easter episode saw a major decline compared to the season 23 premiere, which benefited from a post-Oscars lead-in and pulled in 5.95 million viewers. And while there has been a dip in ratings, there is no concrete evidence to suggest that it is solely because of Underwood.
Carrie Underwood faced backlash for performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration.

This is not the first time Underwood has been called out for her political views. Underwood, who sang “America the Beautiful” a cappella due to technical difficulties, faced criticism for participating in the event, given Donald Trump’s history of policies perceived as anti-LGBTQIA+. The singer later defended her decision to perform, suggesting that she was honored to participate in Trump’s second inauguration.
“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” Underwood said in a statement to People magazine. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
The controversy has led some fans to boycott her music and question her role as a judge on “American Idol.” Despite the backlash, Underwood has not issued further statements regarding the performance.
