D’Angelo made his triumphant return to the stage Saturday night, performing a pair of tracks from his critically acclaimed album Black Messiah on Saturday Night Live.
He kicked off his SNL appearance with a quiet performance of Really Love, but it was his second performance that garnered the most attention, echoing a powerful message that race shouldn’t impact one’s value.
During his performance of The Charade, D’Angelo donned a black hoodie as a gesture of respect to Trayvon Martin, while his band sported “I Can’t Breathe” shirts in honor of Eric Garner.
