So Sad: Man Killed By Falling Tree Ascension Parish, Louisiana, First Reported Death amid Hurricane Ida

As reports from Hurricane Ida’s landfall in Louisiana come in, we’re sad to say that one man has already been reported dead.

Late Sunday night, an unidentified man was killed by a falling tree in Ascension Parish.

via NYDN:

“Shortly after 8:30 p.m. deputies received reports of a citizen possibly injured from a fallen tree at a residence off of Highway 621 in Prairieville,” the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a short statement. “Deputies arrived on scene and confirmed that the victim is now deceased.”

Police did not provide any more details.

Ida coalesced from a few thunderstorms into a Category 4 hurricane over just a few hours, slamming into the Louisiana coast just before 1 p.m. Sunday with fierce 150 mph winds.

It ripped roofs off of major buildings, including at least one hospital, and knocked out power to the entire city of New Orleans.

At 11 p.m. Sunday, the storm’s sustained winds had dropped to a maximum of 105 mph, making it a Category 2 storm in the eyes of the National Hurricane Center. It was roughly 30 miles east-southeast of Baton Rouge, traveling north-northwest at 9 mph.

We’re praying for Louisiana.
