Issa Rae Says ‘Insecure’ Season Three Will Explore Life Without Lawrence: ‘We Want to Stay as True to Life as Possible’

For those of you still holding out hope for Jay Ellis to make an appearance in the upcoming third season of HBO’s ‘Insecure,’ you can let it go.

According to Issa Rae, Lawrence is completely out of the picture this season.

“No, I don’t care!” Rae told Vulture about the fan reactions to Lawrence sitting out next season. “We want to stay as true to life as possible. They had a great conversation at the end of season two and it was just about like, hey, she’s moving on … sometimes we have those conversations,” Rae, 33, said. “You never see the exes again. And it’s okay! You gotta explore life without Lawrence.”

In the last episode, Issa and Lawrence have a dramatic heart-to-heart conversation at their former shared apartment in Inglewood. Lawrence also doesn’t appear in the trailer for the upcoming season.

“We were in the writers room and we were initially talking about, okay, well what is he doing?” said showrunner Prentice Penny. “Well, he’s not in her life right now. It was hard to make stories around that. We just said, well, if he’s not around, he’s not around. Let’s just deal with the reality of what her life is now. Let’s be true to that, when you break up and you have closure.”

With Lawrence out of the picture, it seems there may be room for Rae’s character to meet and date other men.

“I think people will be rooting for her like they kind of always do, to make the right choice,” Penny added.

Daniel, Issa’s other flame in the show played by Y’lan Noel, will be pushed to the forefront, Penny said in a separate Vulture interview.
