In the blink of an eye, many people’s worlds changed as they knew it. Within the past six months, natural disasters have swept through the United States of America at full speed. From catastrophic storms bursting through the Southern region of the map to the recent fires that erupted on the West Coast, the country has continuously been in a place of despair. Because of this, finding outlets like hurricane organizations to donate to is important.
As you may know, in September 2024, Hurricane Helene formed in the Caribbean Sea and grew to a Category 4 emergency as it reached the Gulf of Mexico. Ultimately, the weather hazard landed in the Big Bend of Florida, causing unfathomable damage there, as well as Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Hurricane Helene left numerous fatalities, gaining its horrific title as the deadliest storm to hit the country since 2005’s Hurricane Katrina tragedy.
As if recovery from that wasn’t devastating enough, an uber-powerful Hurricane Milton (which began as a Category 5) came less than two weeks later. By the time Milton set ground in Siesta Key, Florida, it had reduced to a Category 3. However, the tropical cyclone caused massive destruction (yet again) in cities across Florida and Georgia. Additionally, both storms affected parts of Cuba, The Bahamas, Honduras, and the Cayman Islands. Unfortunately, months later, most are still rebuilding what they’ve lost.

1. American Red Cross
The American Red Cross is a volunteer-led, nonprofit organization that provides food and shelter, disaster relief, military support, and blood supply. Founded in 1881 by nurse Clara Barton, the 501(c)(3) administers services globally, with a network of doers and donors who’ve contributed to the philanthropic powerhouse it is today.

2. Samaritan’s Purse
Samaritan’s Purse is a humanitarian aid agency operating from its Christian values to assist the underprivileged. Founded in 1970 by minister Bob Pierce, the nondenominational evangelical group’s mission is to lend a hand to those suffering from war, poverty-stricken communities, and world crises. While spreading the Gospel, their team focuses on giving those in need food, medicine, and other necessities.

3. Feeding America
Feeding America is a nationwide food bank that works relentlessly to end hunger in the United States. Founded in the 1970s by retired businessman John van Hengel, the meal program serves as the country’s largest go-to source for pantry needs, disaster response, and financial assistance to fellow organizations.

4. The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army is an international, faith-based movement celebrated for its slew of supportive avenues for disadvantaged individuals. Founded in 1865 by Methodist preacher William Booth, the evangelistic collective is famous for its household assistance, rehabilitation services, job training, worship centers, and emergency aid.

5. United Way
United Way is a worldwide operation that enriches the educational, financial, and physical lives of the challenged. Founded in 1887 by Frances Wisebart Jacobs, Myron W. Reed, William J. O’Ryan, and William S. Friedman, the chapter-run alliance uses partnerships, school prep, family funding, and catastrophe rescue to serve citizens.
