What Would You Do? Brinks Truck Accidentally Spills $600,000 on an Indianapolis Highway, Police Ask Citizens to Turn It In [Video]

A Brinks armored truck filled with $600,000 in cash made an accidental deposit when its doors flew open on an interstate in Indianapolis — and people wasted no time taking to the highway to pick up the loose bills.

Motorists in the vicinity pulled over for their chance to grab the bills as they blew across the road.

The brouhaha erupted around 9 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 70 on the southwest side of the city.

State police spokesman Sgt. John Perrine said calls came in “about money blowing all over the interstate and people trying to catch it.”

The money was contained in bags, some of which broke open and sent thousands of dollars in paper currency flying.

“Some motorists, without regard for their safety or the safety of other motorists, stopped in the middle of the interstate to gather and pocket the wind-blown money, as well as the unbroken money bags,” Perrine said in a statement.

Some people held handfuls of cash, which was returned to Brinks, according to Perrine.

Others were forced to empty their pockets and bags, too, he said.Police are looking for motorists who took off with unknown amounts of cash before troopers arrived at the scene.

They’re searching for four men in a white pickup truck who reportedly made off with a bag of money.

A school bus driver also reportedly stopped to collect loose bills, and drove away from the scene. It was unclear whether or not kids were in the bus when it pulled over.

Troopers will monitor the scene throughout the day, warning that stealing the cash amounts to theft, which is a felony offense.

Police implored motorists to give back the cash they had already stolen.

“If you are willing in good conscience to turn it back in there is amnesty, no real questions asked if you’re willing to give it back,” ISP corporal Brock McCooe said, CBS News reported.

“Fortunately, a number of people made the lawful and morally correct decision to return money they had picked up from the scene. None of these people were charged with a crime,” Perrine said in a statement.

Several people have already contacted police to return the money they took. It’s unclear who much money is still missing.

What would you do? If you picked up the money — would you return it?
