James Franco has admitted to trying to pick up 17-year-old using Instagram after his private conversations with the girl ended up online earlier this week.

‘I’m embarrassed and I guess I’m just a model of how social media is tricky,’ he told Kelly and Michael on Friday morning.

Many believed his stunt was a either a late April Fool’s Day prank — or he was just trying to drum up some publicity for his latest film Palo Alto, which coincidentally is about a soccer coach having an affair with a teenager.

He didn’t address the age of the girl, but he did say that he didn’t expect their conversations to be made public.

‘It’s the way that people meet each other today, but what I’ve learned- I guess because I’m new to it- is you don’t know who’s on the other end,’ he said.  ‘You meet somebody in person, you get a feel for them, you don’t know who you’re talking to. I used bad judgement and I learned my lesson. Unfortunately in my position, not only do I have to go through the embarrassing rituals of meeting someone, but if I do that, then it gets published for the world so it’s doubly embarrassing’

We bet he did. Check out his appearance below.
