Back in the 90s, Xena and her partner Gabriella fought side-by-side in the classic TV series Xena: Warrior Princess.
If you were old enough to catch the subtext, it was clear that Xena and Gabriella may have been more than just friends…but again, it was the 90s and lesbianism was too taboo for television.
Now, it’s 2016 and Xena: Warrior Princess is getting a reboot — and Xena will be openly gay —according to executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach.
“There is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually [sic] in first-run syndication in the 1990s,” Javier Grillo-Marxuach wrote in a Tumblr response. “It will also express my view of the world—which is only further informed by what is happening right now—and is not too difficult to know what that is if you do some digging.”
Kudos to progress. As fans of the original series, we’re interested to see how this plays out.
