‘Training Day’ Director Antoine Fuqua Developing Film About Assassinated Black Panther Leader Fred Hampton

The story of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton may be headed to the big screen.

Antoine Fuqua, who directed the Oscar-nominated film Training Day, is developing a film about the American activist.

According to Variety, the film, which currently has no title, is based on Jeffrey Haas’ book The Assassination of Fred Hampton: How the FBI and the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther.

The Black Panther leader was assassinated in his sleep during a raid on his apartment in 1969. The raid was carried out by a state tactical unit in conjunction with the Chicago Police Department and FBI. His death was ruled as a justifiable homicide by the inquest.

Antoine’s next feature film—The Equalizer 2—hits theaters in 2018.
