That’s Nasty: Claire’s Pulls Makeup From Stores After They Tested Positive for Asbestos

Claire’s, the popular cheap accessories company, is pulling items from its stores after several makeup products tested positive for asbestos.

The company announced the recall on their site and on Twitter just before Christmas, saying they were pulling the products and launching an investigation.

“As a result of today’s inquiry from WJAR-TV, we have taken the precautionary measure of pulling the items in question from sale, and will be conducting an immediate investigation into the alleged issues. Once we have more information and have the results of the investigation we will take the necessary action. If you have items you wish to return in the interim period we will issue a refund,” the company wrote in its recall notice.

The recall began after a Rhode Island mom found asbestos meant for her 6-year-old daughter in a Claire’s makeup kit.

Kristi Warner bought the makeup set at Providence Place Mall and was suspicious about its ingredients, so she sent it off to a lab. The lawyer, who works for Deaton Law Firm, an asbestos litigation firm, was disappointed to learn her suspicions were correct: the makeup contained tremolite asbestos, a cancer-causing toxin.

“In the work that we do, we’ve come across contaminated cosmetics, but you just assume that a children’s product would be safe,” said Warner to WJAR in Rhode Island.

After purchasing 17 more Claire’s products, Warner and her boss John Deaton found asbestos in every single sample tested.

The nine products that made up the 17 samples — which the company has recalled and removed from shelves — include: Ultimate Mega Make Up Set, Metallic Hot Pink Glitter 48 piece Makeup Set, Bedazzled Rainbow Heart Make Up Set and the Pink Glitter Cellphone Makeup Compact.

Claire’s is issuing full refunds on the products in the case. Claire’s recall hotline, 800-804-7194, is open from 8 A.M. to 11 P.M.
